DMIA PREPS UP MEASURES VS SWINE FLU

CLARK FREEPORT -- The Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) has intensified its procedures to ensure that it can prevent the entrance of the dreaded swine flu virus through passengers coming in through the airport.

Victor Jose Luciano, president and chief executive officer of Clark International Airport Corporation (Ciac), said DMIA is working closely with quarantine officials to monitor passengers that might carry swine flu.

"We have thermal scanners looking in at every passenger coming inside DMIA. As soon as there are indications that a passenger has the symptoms we will implement the needed medical interventions," Luciano said, adding that they will also be coordinating with hospitals in Angeles City and nearby areas to provide the needed medical assistance.

The airport, according to Luciano, is also coordinating with other quarantine officials to further improve the preparedness of DMIA to prevent the entrance of swine flu.

He admitted that swine flu would have an effect on the airport and travel industries and this "ripple effect" will also be felt by DMIA.

The Department of Health (DOH) has stepped up surveillance measures to prevent the entry of the swine flu virus among other airports and ports of entry in the country.

Edgardo Sabitsana, chief of the Bureau of Quarantine, said thermal scanning at international airports has been beefed up for passengers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The DOH said that while officials are scampering to prevent the disease, local community leaders should orient their general population about proper coughing and sneezing manners. Sneezing and coughing, experts say, may lodge viral infection into saliva droplets into the air, posing as health risk to unsuspecting targets within a range of six feet.

It is also asking the public to observe proper hygiene, constant hand washing, and boosting of body resistance as measures to combat the disease.
